My life, My memory, My dream

Hola! So this is the continuation of my Korea trip. Checked out from Busan and here we go explore into the heart of Seoul, where all the shopping and eating takes place!

DAY 5
Back at Seoul station via KTX (check on my previous post on which passes we got for ourselves), and again took jumbo taxi to check into Chungmuro Residence & Hotel
Chungmuro Residence & Hotel - boutique stay
Where we stayed:
Chungmuro Residence & Hotel - check it out here
Address: 245, Toegye-ro, Jung-gu, Myeong-dong,
Seoul, South Korea 04559
Phone: +82-2-2273-3191 / 3192

The day was getting late, so we just had some slow strolls along Myeongdong Street to have some street food, and early dinner before going for the Nanta Show.  It was very entertaining and made us laughed and clapped throughout the entire show.
I chose the "S seating" for our family - which the ticket usually costs about RM 150. However, during the winter promotion from Klook (a travel app available in both iPhone and android), I got it for RM96 per ticket, as well as redeemed free face masks through this Klook voucher (collaboration between Klook and Shinsegae Departmental Store) at the counter upon arrival at Myeongdong Theater. Just be sure to to arrive at the theater slightly earlier to get tickets for the show by showing either printed or mobile voucher.
Getting Here: From Chungmuro station --> Myeong Dong station, take exit 6

Clockwise from top left: Spicy tteokboki w chicken, pan grilled mandu, gyeranbbang (egg bread)
Baby boy though' looking very tired here but very happy w his giant ice cream
Dakgalbi (spicy stir-fried chicken) for dinner @ Yoogane - before the last few bites, request a rice to be mixed in!
Nanta show - an entertaining non-verbal show using kitchen utensils
DAY 6
Hassle-free day cause' today's arrangement were all bought from Klook. Today we ventured out from Seoul city to Petit France and Nami Island.
Price: RM 157 (adult); RM142 (child 3-12)
How To: Tour bus departing from Myeongdong station Exit 2 (in front of Hotel Prince) -- Look for banner / staff wearing the name tag (K Tourstory); May present mobile voucher

A sunny hot day packed w crowd at the Island, but we had a very good time taking beautiful autumn photos. Visuals as follows

The day was well spent at Nami Island, and we returned to Dongdaemun for dinner. Again, dinner voucher was bought from Klook. I got us 2 medium platter of spiced pig's trotter at Man Jok Oh Hyang Jokbal (one of the top 3 jokbal places in Seoul) for the price of RM 256. The meal was satisfying to everyone, even for sis-in-law who doesn't really eat pork. The meat was properly marinated and cooked with soy sauce and lots of spice to our liking.
Getting Here: Take subway line 2 to Dongdaemun Historical & Cultural Park station, take exit 13

We ordered an extra spicy naengmyeon (korean cold noodles) and mandu soup to go w the spiced and spicy pork trotters
Man Jok Oh Hyang Jokbal
Address (Dongdaemun Branch): 18-77, Euljiro 6, Jung-gu, Seoul
(서울시중구을지로6가 18-77)
Opening Hours: 4:00pm - 2:00am

DAY 7
Back on track w the subway, we explored Seoul slightly more. Woke up early morning so that we can grab breakfast before visiting the famous Ewha Women's University.
Getting Here: Take subway line 2 to  Ewha Women's University station, take exit 2

Now my FB profile photo, heh 😜

Next, I purposely brought parents and sis on a detour to Sinsa for lunch for the famous ganjang gejang (raw crab marinated in soy sauce). Before the trip, I've been looking up for good restaurants and this Pro Ganjang Gejang Restaurant in Sinsa came up many times in those searches. However, there are a few more restaurants at Ganjang Alley.
I still drool for those heavenly crabs as I'm typing this away. Daddy was the happiest as he said this is his best meal at Korea. Though' the crabs weren't exactly cheap, but this is definitely a must try when you're at Korea. No regrets at all taking all the effort to reach here for this scrumptious lunch.
Getting Here: Take subway line 3 to Sinsa station, take exit 4. Walk straight for about 20 meters and take a right. Walk for about 80 meters and you should see the beginning of Ganjang Alley.

Pro Ganjang Gejang - marked as (A) in the map above
Look at all the goodness
Order a crab roe rice and savor all the goodness / make your owm version by stuffing plain rice into the roe-filled shell
Next, off we go to Insadong and reunite w bro, sis-in-law and baby boy. Insadong is a place rich with culture and unique tea houses, painting / art galleries, temples, and museums. All the oldest structures can be found here, and if you appreciate traditional buildings like the oldest post office or korean themed Starbucks, this is the place you should go for.
Getting Here: Take subway line 3 to Anguk station, take exit 6. Walk about 100 meters and turn left.

Jogyesa Temple
Ujeongchongguk (First central post office at Korea)
Too bad we went to the post office on a Sunday (it was closed), hence we didn't get to see the inside of it nor I am able to send postcards back home from there. However, later on I found a tiny shop run by a pair of elderly who sell stamps and I got to drop some of my postcards at the red box located just outside their shop.

Told you, my family developed big love for this ssiat-hotteok (but the best stayed at Busan)
스타벅스 인사점 (Starbucks) written in Hangul
Not leaving until I get myself a cuppa
Gung's specialty - Kaseong style north korean mandu (dumplings). History of 30 years.
After spending few good hours at Insadong, we head over to N-Seoul Tower. In order to save time, we grabbed a taxi. Bought tower tickets through Klook.
Price: RM 25 (adult); RM21 (child 3-12) - Observatory only. Check out the other combo from Klook.

Got a lil' souvenir for myself
N Seoul Tower was fascinating and the view from top took my breath away. Very happy w the whole experience except that I almost froze in my Minnie hoodie dress (it was only about 10-12 degrees at night). Said goodnight to Day 7 w supper at Better & Happier Choice chicken chain before going back to the hotel to unwind the rest of the night.

DAY 8
Today is last day of Korea trip (pocket money is finishing from all the shopping :p) hence it's best to spend the day sight-seeing and knowing some Korea cultures. Woke up early to get to Gyeongbokgung Palace to get the palace tickets, as well as to catch the changing guard performance.
Admission Fees: 3,000 won / Groups of  ≥10 people 2,400 won (adult ages 19-64)
                           1,500 won / Groups of  ≥10 people 1,200 won (children 7-18)
Royal Guard-Changing Ceremony Performance Times: 10:00-15:00 (6 times a day / on the hour) all year round, except on Tuesdays.

Guard changing time
After watching the performance, we went in search for a nearby breakie at Gwanghwamun Square.

Found a local small shop which serves really good ramen & kimbap
Parents were getting very tired from walking during this whole trip, hence they didn't join entering the palace w sister and I. We had an hour and a half to explore the whole palace before joining them for lunch. We never really thought we could make it till' the end, but we did! Talk bout' speed walking 😓

Gwanghwamun Square
Gyeongbukgung Palace
Beautiful autumn

After exploring the hugeeeee palace, we were worn out and starving. Met the rest of the family at the entrance of palace, and walked to the famous lunch of samgyetang at Tosokchan. You wouldn't really miss the place cause' there's always a large crowd standing outside the restaurant queueing. However, turnover rate was quite fast so we didn't waited for too long. The kimchi was awesome, and they sell it in bottles and ready-packed for check-in. I stupidly left the bottle in my hand-carry (totally forgoteen to transfer it into my big luggage), hence I gotta leave this kimchi at the airport 😭

Proper way to savour the goodness of the chicken
L: Samgyetang R: Pajeon (korean pancake)
Getting here: From Gyeongbokgung Palace main entrance, walk 1 block along Sajik-ro street to your right then turn right to Jahamun-ro street and walk some few meters then turn left to Jahamun-ro 5-gil street

After a hearty lunch, we were ready to get on our feet again. Walked all the way to Bukchon Hanok Village - korean traditional village, and coincidentally sister and I got our way lost (we separated from the rest of the family who didn't wanna go up the steepy road at Bukchon Hanok Village) and ended up at Samcheondong.

That was the last of our Korea trip, and went back to Myeongdong for our last dinner before packing stuffing all those buyings into the luggage.

Final dinn - James Cheese Back Ribs

DAY 9
Time to be back home, and I kinda miss my own bed already.

Enjoying my window seat at its best
This can easily lasts me for 2 years 💸💸

This is a long-awaited family vacation, one which I've planned most of the itinerary trying to cover the places where everyone wants to go. Just like the saying goes "too much to do, too little time".
Then I decided, maybe we shouldn't be too ambitious - a trip being worthwhile is which the company matters, and not so much of the locations afterall.

This is gonna be a long detailed post, so here we go.

DAY 1
Arrived at Incheon International Airport about 7pm, proceeded to collect our portable 4G unlimited wifi egg (lifesaver for the next 9 days of adventures!) which I rented it before travelling begins. Got the deal through KKday and we paid for TWD741, which is about RM 97 for 9 days. It was a good deal, and it can connect up to 4 devices from time to time.
Pick-up points:
- ICH International Airport 1/F Arrival Hall, near Gate 10 KT Olleh booth (6am-10pm)
- ICH International Airport 1/F Arrival Hall, near Gate 6 KT Olleh booth (10pm-6am)
Then, we were welcomed by a gush of cold wind as made our way out from the airport, and we just grabbed a taxi to get us to our hotel. Checked into Hotel Air Relax, and had our first amazing Korean dinner nearby hotel before we call it a night.

DAY 2
Woke up early to catch our train to Busan via KTX - high-speed rail train. Bought our tickets from Korail official website, and the type of tickets we got for ourselves is the "2 day select pass", which is the flexible pass where it offers us the freedom to select the dates we want within 10 valid days.
You may want to check out the latest price changes, and time schedule over here Korail

KTX experience
Meal during train ride - breakie w onigiri / kimbap & banana milk is big 💓

Upon arrival at Busan, we again grabbed 1 jumbo taxi and 1 normal taxi (as there are 7 of us, and not to forget all our luggages) to Queens Hotel, Seomyeon for our stay for the next 3 nights. Jumbo taxis are more expensive but we don't have much choice as we were travelling in quite a big group consists of elderly and a child. By the time we checked into the hotel, we were all starving hence took some recommendations from the hotel staff and came to this bbq place for lunch.
Happy faces after lunch
Seomyeon station is just about 5 mins walk from our hotel.
Getting Here: From Seomyeon station take subway line 1 to Nampo station, Exit 1 or 3 and from there we were all walks. We explored from Nampo-Dong - Yongdusan Park - BIFF Square.

Busan Observatory Tower @ Yongdusan Park
BIFF Square

Met my Yong Hwa at BIFF Square (only footprints :p)

Dinner at Nampodong
L: Korean hamburg steak set; R: Tteokboki w spicy chicken
DAY 3
Today we ventured out to the famous Gamcheon Cultural Village, where all the colourful houses are. Due to insufficient time, we skipped the public transport and took a cab instead. Do take note that there are residents still staying there, so do keep the voices down no matter how much of excitement you are in seeing those beautiful views.

Panoramic view of Gamcheon Village
Village full of creative murals and painted walls & buildings

R: Ssiat-hotteok (Pancake stuffed w seeds); L: Eomuk (Fish cake soup)
Next, off to Jakgalchi Market for seafood lunch and our first experience of live raw octopus.
Getting Here: From Gamcheon Cultural Village, take bus No 7 and alight at Jakgalchi Market bus stop
Personally, I think this place is overrated and the food didn't tastes exactly good, and the prices are not cheap for a wet market. But, this is the place to go if you wish to experience raw moving squids, abalones and fish sashimi.

Had a little tour around the market
L: Seafood soup; R: Fish sashimi
The soup we ordered was bland and had a strong "fishy" smell,  I still prefer the usual Japanese sashimi (especially my salmon belly, yums). Gathered up my courage and tried the raw squid. Actually, there wasn't much taste, it was just crunchy and chewy - imagine an elastic band?
**Take note: Market is close on first and third Tuesday of every month**

After an unimpressive lunch (my own personal opinion), we left for Taejeongdae. The whole duration took about 45 mins to an hour to reach.

Getting Here: From Jakgalchi Market, take bus No 30, and get off at Taejeongdae (Taejeongdae Oncheon) bus stop → Walk about 175m to Taejeongdae.

The cliffs here are facing the open sea on the southermost tip of island of Yeongdo-gu. The photos didn't turn out as beautiful as it was supposed to be cause' the skies were gloomy and started to rain shortly after we reached. There were many options of tour course to be chosen from, check out: Taejeongdae Tour Course Information . For us, we took the Danubi Train Course. We didn't had enough time for everything, so we chose to alight at Yeongdo Lighthouse and Observatory.

In the Danubi Train

TAEJEONGDAE - The approaching stormy skies
R: Cliff overlooking the rough sea; L: The observatory
Baby boy having alot of fun cause' he loves the cold weather
Tips: Do not get to Taejeongdae too late if you wanna take beautiful photos of skyline between the white clouds and blue sea.

Dinner back at Seomyeon
Top Right: Hotel delivery as supper - jajangmyeon (black bean noodles) & tangsuyuk (sweet and sour pork)
DAY 4
Started the day off w a little workout. We caught a bus ride and after plenty of walks, we arrive to this magnificent temple which is located at the cliff side - Haedong Yonggusa Temple. Though' we complained of all the walks we had, but seeing that view, we knew hard work was well paid off.
Getting Here: From Seomyeon Station, take subway line 2 to Haeundae Station. Come out from Exit 7, then take bus No. 181 and get off at Yonggungsa Temple, approx. 20 mins. There is a stone post which indicate the direction of the temple. Walk uphill for another 10 mins to get to the temple.

Greeted by this giant furball upon arrival
My family developed a huge love for ssiat hotteok - buying it whenever we see it

Sunny day - perfect for photos taking

All the walks and hikes worth this picturesque view

Next, off for lunch (with cab) and today's choice was to try out the traditional beef broth rice. There were quite a few shops, famously known as Gukbap Alley to be chosen from near Haeundae beach (our next destination).

Beef Gukbap & Samanco ice cream
After lunch, we took a slow stroll towards Haeundae Beach where the BIFF stage was. Coincidentally, the week we were there was the Busan International Film Festival week.

Red carpet took place here during BIFF
Had Starbucks coffee while overlooking the beautiful view, and had some walks on the beach before we go to Shinsegae Centum City Department Store.
Getting Here: From Haeundae station --> Centum City station
We went is purely cause' it was registered in the Guinness World Records as the largest shopping complex in the world. The highlight of this departmental store is Jjimjilbang Spa Land  (which we didn't had the chance to experience it) As a consolation, we got to taste the best cheese tart. Only then we knew, this is a chain from Japan.
True to its claim: The best cheese tart EVER
Before we call it a night, we went for a night stroll at Gwanggali Beach To check for bridge lighting timing, get to this [Bridge Lighting]
Getting Here: Centum City station --> Gwangan station, take exit 3 or 5

Gwangandaegyo Bride a.k.a Diamond Bridge
Making sure that all of us are hungry after all these walks, we head back to Seomyeon for dinner. Again, we took the recommendation of hotel staff - this time to try out Busan specialty, pork broth soup. The looks weren't all appetising, but the taste definitely got us wanting for more.

Clockwise top left to bottom right: Dwaeji Gukbap; Bottom Left: Spicy fried chicken as supper
Where we stayed:
Queens Hotel, Busan - check it out here
Address: Bujeon-ro 56, Busanjin-gu, Busan, Korea
(Old format: 515-54, Busan-dong,  Busanjin-gu, Busan, Korea)
Phone: +82-51-806-8871

We had no complaints staying at this hotel, and was very satisfied with their service. Breakfast served in the mornings were all traditional korean home-cooked. Their friendly hotel staff even had printed hand-outs of directions to nearby restaurants as well as maps to local attraction sites. Those print-outs eased alot of our journey and solved questions of "what to eat" and "where to eat"

So, there goes our Busan trip. Day 5 is continue at my next post Korea Part II: Food for Seoul
